My Fair Lady – Film Style

March 19, 2012
By

If I’m having a gloomy day, a classic musical is a sure way to pick up my mood.  This last weekend the 1964 movie on the menu was “My Fair Lady” starring the timeless icon Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle and Rex Harrison as Professor Higgins.  The quality of the sets, the costumes, the props are something that we don’t see so much nowadays.  Every detail was perfected, specifically arranged and well cared for… nothing was haphazard or accidental when it came to the background in each scene.  Eliza’s well maintained makeover in romantic, feminine frocks is a beauty to behold.  On the opposite side of the spectrum you find Professor Higgins’ library in masculine leather, dark wood, shades of green, and eccentric anatomical accents.  Watch the lengthy film from bed and sing along through the curious transformation.

Chatham Girl Hats – Zara Carpenter Millinary – handmade pick of the week

Costume-esque anything is up my alley.  Gaudy jewelry , theatrical level clothing, big hair , and tall heels are some of my favorite over the top guilty pleasures.  However I haven’t quite reached the place where I feel comfortable sporting a fascinator hat yet.   Maybe if I had a top notch event to saunter into…. but until then I’m drooling over these beauties by Zara Carpenter from Chatham Girl’s Millinary boutique.

The bird and the bee – look & listen

Finding music that is soft and easy going while being up beat and cheerful all at the same time can be difficult.  Recently my friend Megan introduced me to a fantastic band that meets the criteria ; The Bird And The Bee via the most awkward and amazing music video featuring some elderly folk getting their dance on.  AWESOME.  I have moved on to their album “Ray Guns Are Not Just The Future” being on heavy rotation in my car, which is the best way to test out music in my opinion.  Then I found the holy grail…. their album “Interpreting The Masters Volume 1: A Tribute To Daryl Hall And John Oates”.  That’s right, Hall and Oates cover album.  Enough Said.  Check out the quirky videos and pictures to steal some ideas for a boss vintage inspired wardrobe like Inara or Greg.

Penelope – Christina Ricci – Film Style

September 1, 2011
By

Every now and then a new movie comes out that is so visually stunning it makes me want to jump inside the TV like an episode of School House Rock.  Penelope has everything I love in a movie : a non realistic fantasy storyline , beautiful cinematography , quirky wardrobe , and sets / scenes that depict a world outside the typical.  Some could argue that the depth of the plot isn’t quite as unique as it potentially could have been, but I’m a sucker for romantic comedies therefore those critics can buzz off.  Each scene showcases the belongings and surroundings that have shaped Penelope’s personality and fears.  As the film continues the layers are slowly stripped away to get to the problem plaguing Penelope  ( played by Christina Ricci ) .  Directed by Mark Palansky , supporting cast including James McEvoy , Reese Witherspoon and Catherine O’Hara.  A perfect family oriented, feel good movie…. perfect for a family night or date night all the same.

Moon Collection – fall 2011 – covet corner

Transitioning from summer to fall wardrobe is difficult for many reasons, for me it’s number one frustration is about temperature comfort.  When I get too hot or muggy, I’m cranky… and too cold means shivers and goosebumps.  So naturally layers and thinner materials is a must when it comes time to prepping for fall without getting too bulky.  Moon Collection clothing line has a great array of romantic feminine pieces that are sure to make the list for your next online shopping spree.

Clothes to snare a millionaire? Well, that logic doesn’t exactly apply to my married scenario… BUT I could sure go for some delectable 50′s esque bombshell duds from Wheels and Dollbaby anyday.  The slim pencil skirts, belted cardigans and all around curve hugging attire makes me think of sassy dames with debonair gents on their arm.  Pick up one of these saucy numbers and make yourself a date!

She & Him – Look & Listen

Your first encounter with Zooey Deschanel may have been the same as mine, a gorgeous girl who showcased her pipes like a songbird in the classic “Elf” with Will Ferrell.  She has come full circle, from acting to a successful music career in the group “She & Him”.  The HIM side of the duo consists of the simply styled M. Ward.  Crooning is just one of Zooey’s many talents, including looking naturally gorgeous and having impeccable taste making her one of my ultimate style icons.  Being married to “Death Cab For Cutie” lead singer Ben Gibbard doesn’t hurt her adorable factor either, what a talented cutie pie couple they are! I probably don’t have to voice how jealous I am of her… ummmm….EVERYTHING.

Films with Style – Thoroughly Modern Millie

August 8, 2011
By

Maybe musicals have a tendency to annoy the majority of the population, but I on the other hand revel in them.  Especially ones with as much 1920′s inspired clothing and dancing as the 1967 “Thoroughly Modern Millie”.  Julie Andrews is just as expected, the force that brings the movie to a classic level.  It has more cheek and humor than her typical film, and who wouldn’t enjoy a romance involving Millie trying to slyly secure her boss as her future husband?  The music is also a great point of interest to pay attention to throughout the film with such timeless classics as “Baby Face” and “Jazz Baby”.  If you haven’t seen this amazing film featuring great actors and actresses such as Mary Tyler Moore , Carol Channing , and James Fox; add it to your Netflix list now.  Let it take you back to a time when hats were not only accepted as daily wear, but encouraged.
