Helmet Head Salon – Georgetown , Seattle – salon / spa of the month

August 29, 2011
By

Helmet Head Salon located in Georgetown , Seattle is a stand out sight to behold.  The space emits a joyful vibe that invites you in and gets you energized to have fun with the ladies who rock your locks.  From the lighted fireplace seating area to the classic car perched right next to the shampoo bowls, the owner Samantha Mar has not overlooked a single detail while creating the perfect artistic environment for her staff and guests. I’m lucky enough to know three of the talented stylists there , two are previous GJA students and another teacher from Gene Juarez (Lorena) who dazzled my thirsty hair during the visit.   A quick description of Helmet Head Salon in the owner’s words… ” Helmet Head has been burnin’ and curlin’ for almost 10 years.  We’ve got a great team down here that love making folks feel great and have fun while doing it.  I started out as a little tumbleweed in Eastern WA. The wind blew me over the Cascades and landed me in Seattle back in the last century, and I’ve been working and living in South Seattle for quite a while now. My hobbies are:  running  a business, running  a business, and running a business.“  Services range from cuts, color , extensions, waxing, facials, and massage.  They even have their own make up bar to keep your face looking as flawless as your hair.  Make time for a visit into Georgetown to get pampered and styled by some extraordinary women with skills.

No heat curls – hair tutorial experiment

August 25, 2011
By

I’m a noob when it comes to the plethera of beauty tutorials that are now available on the wonderful world wide web.  So when my good friend miss Ashley shared this little gem of a link, it seemed too easy to not give it a go.  The video tutorial for no heat curls from lipstickdiaries was easy to follow, a bit long in some places so I skipped ahead for certain moments. I’ve tried this technique 4 times now and have found a way of adjusting the technique and the after styling to my liking.  Since my hair is far too curly naturally I decided to completely dry my hair before I began the technique, I used a serum on the ends after it was dry to ensure the ends were smooth as I placed them into the headband.  In the morning I brushed out the curls just like in the video, however for styling I set the base with backcombing over my entire head.  At the end I defined some of the curls with a wave defining cream.  The technique turns out different depending on your hair cut, length and where you place the headband so I included some other ladies results as well.  The only thing I’m not thrilled with is how bouncy the curls can be, which makes my hair look so much shorter than I like.  Try it several ways until you find the best way for you, it’s worth the time and effort to save your hair from heat damage and spending so much time styling in the mornings.

How To Hair – The Modern Bardot

August 9, 2011
By

In the hair styling world, Bridget Bardot is at the top of effortless va va va voom hair inspiration.  Her varied looks scream of hot summers where the last thing you want to do is spend all your time getting ready in the mirror.  Follow along for a hair tutorial from Modern Salon by Anthony Morrison, owner of Londoner Salon and Spa, Manhattan Beach, California.

1 - Blow dry the hair smooth. Set hair in large electric rollers, wrapping away from the face and back. Wrap a Mohawk section toward the crown from a high side parting

2 – Take sections from along the top of the head and pull straight up. Backcomb at the base to create a strong foundation. Work back to the crown. Remove the fringe strands and then gather the top and side strands to the crown. Smooth back and secure at the crown. To fi nish the half down look, use a curling iron to create soft curls.

3 – For a polished evening look, take one inch sections from the back, pull out and backcomb the base.

4 – Place a bobby pin at midpoint and twist. Direct to the opposite side, twist and secure at the crown.

5 – Continue working throughout the lengths, pinning sections to the crown.

Piggies with a pedicure

August 2, 2011

Rarely do I enjoy paying someone else to take care of my feet or nails, since I feel like most the time I really should be able to treat them nice myself.  With the wedding however, I decided to get my toes done so they would look nice in my heels.  When I get a pedicure the polish is just the icing on top of the cake, because I really enjoy getting everything else looking smooth and fresh more.  This time I went with a black french tip, featuring white polka dots.  Online I’ve searched for some cute polishing ideas to try for myself and I just don’t see too many out there I like.  So my goal is to come up with some DIY fun painting tricks for all of us who like to save our cash for other purchases.  Here’s to attractive and happy feet!

Ban.do Hair Accessories – Shop of the Month July 2011

July 24, 2011
By

My current economical budget does not allow me to spend the average price tag of $350 per item at Ban.do Hair Accesories , but the pieces are so delectable that you will find yourself trying to rationalize the cost of a lottery ticket so that someday you could.  They have several different collections available in their shop including my favorite section called “Black Label” ; which are one of a kind items that are made from vintage and antique supplies.  Since they only make one of each piece, the cost of course reflects just that.  They have other items that are factory made, less costly but nowhere near as extraordinary.  Save up for your wedding , ice cream social or make up a reason to need an extravagant headband… just make it happen before they are all gone.

Bright hues for your tips : Summer hair trend 2011

July 16, 2011
By

Being no stranger to bright hues in my locks, with my first blue hair color job at the age of 14 ; this summer trend isn’t nearly as shocking as it is welcomed and appreciated.  When a celebrity like Lauren Conrad adds purples and blues to her infamous blonde mane, it instantly makes things acceptable to a far broader range of styles.  Even conservative girls can pull off small amounts of their favorite color, the key is to use a semi-permanent color product versus a permanent choice that would have to be removed or cut off once you outgrow the trend.  My advice is to visit a professional colorist in your area for a consultation to see if this is a viable option for your natural color and wallet.
